You're supposed to take off the trans side, the dreaded taper pin & nut, so you don't lose your adjustment. Easier said than done. I have never had one come out yet, using all sorts or removal methods. I usuall end up drilling it out after the trans is out of the car, which means, I tried, then removed the pinch bolt near the firewall anyway.
I would advise to skip the taper pin removal, go right for the pinch bolt. I've used a small ¼" drive ratchet with a 10" wobble extension ot loosen in the past, tough to reach, but someone had posted to remove the driver's side wheel, and use long extensions to go through the side. Sounds good for removal, but makes re-installation a 2 person job.
To re-adjust the coupler, Townsend advises to put trans in 3rd, use an allen key to lock shifter, then pull back on the shifter rod to pull out an extra few thousandth's of slack. This is important, as when I just put trans into 3rd, without tuggng on trans shaft, the trans would pop out of 1st gear.
