How do you crack a gear case by cutting a coil of a suspension spring? I don't see how they are related. Unless of course the shade-tree mechanic cut them too much or installed them incorrectly. I'm not questioning your advice but I've never heard one of these many stories. Please explain.
I cut a coil off my '94 900T to see if I liked the lower ride height before "springing" for a set of SPGs. I drove the car around for two years without any problem. I guess I was just lucky.
