Ok now I know where you are. One wire goes to the fuse box and feeds several fuses and components and the other wire goes unfused directly to the 152A bulkhead connector and then to the ignition switch.

So you need to continue to move downstream to pin down the culprit. I would disconnect the battery ground cable and put a ammeter in series between the battery terminal and the cable end. Then begin pulling fuses one by one until the current flow drops.

If the fuse pulling execise doesn't pin down the problem, then I'd suspect a problem with the wire that goes directly to the ignition switch. The main harness that feeds the switch (and lots of other stuff) runs next to the console and is subject to exhaust heat and can melt if the heatshields are rotted. Also, if your ignition switch ever stuck in the start position, you may have melted some harness wires together.

At this point I would remove the rear portion of the console to get at the ignition switch. Pull the grey wire off of terminal 30 on the switch to see if the current flow now stops(same ammeter in the ground circuit). If so, the wire to the switch is OK, and the problem is most likely in the switch, the harness leading from the switch up to the bulkhead connector, or components fed by it before the fusebox. Check the operation of the ignition switch with an ohmmeter.

The headlight switch is one of these components fed from the ignition switch, and I would now pull the headlight switch out of the dash and remove the wires from the switch one at a time(leave the green/violet wire connected to terminal X connected) and look for the meter to drop again.

If the drain remains, I would now pull the main bulkhead connectors 152 a, b and c one at a time, to see if the problem is in the harness under the carpet or in the wiring to the fusebox probably in the harness.

Remove the driver's seat and door trim and peel back the carpet to the console area to find the harness running along the console floor up behind the pedals to the bulkhead connectors. The problem is likely to be in the area near the floor/exhaust heat. Start peeling off the wrapper until you find the short. Repair the short by soldering in fresh sections of wire and then tape up the harness after you have verified that the short has been found.

I may have missed something and there may be some components fed off the ignition switch other than the headlight switch that I have forgotten about.

We don't have our 85 anymore, but I did have to replace several harness wires due to a similar problem a few years ago.

Good luck and don't give up, you'll find it.
