...so I am obligated to use flex. It fills NYC scratches very well. I prefer that to sanding the plastic thinner. I have heard some say that the paint will slightly flow the primer, so the flex in the paint will add flex to the primer. I was taught to add flex to everything, so I do it. Maybe I am just set in my ways. Then again, I also am following manufacturers instructions for my paint. Bottom line, call the paint manufacturer and ask! Different manufacturers want different procedures. I just saw an old 1976 Cadilac I painted in my younger years. The plastic pieces between the body and the bumper look brand new, so the paint has stood the test of time. The car however is garaged and never really sees much sunlight.
The key I think to get good paint bonding is to clean all surfaces with rubbing alcohol, then prepsol. That cleans and then opens up microscopic pores and allows the primer and paint to adhere well. I like heat lamps after that.
When using 400 grit, I would suggest wet, not dry.
