When you turn the key to Start, does the starter turn the engine over, or does nothing happen - not even the starter?
If the engine isn't being turned over by the starter, it isn't the ignition amplifier. The starter system is pretty simple. When you turn the key, do you hear a click from the starter area, or just nothing? Do the lights dim when you turn the key to start, or do they stay bright?
If the lights stay bright, and there is no click, I'd suspect the shifter interlock. The car won't turn over unless the shifter is in Park. If that switch is bad or misaligned, that can prevent the starter from getting power. Try wiggling the shifter some - if that does the trick, either replace the switch or algin it.
If the lights stay bright and there is a click, I'd suspect a bad solenoid or starter.
If the lights dim, I'd suspect a bad connection at the battery. Remove and clean all connections. Inspect the battery cable for corrosion.
