Precursor. I'm 19, I have had one car given to me, an '86 S-10 Blazer. Driven plenty, worked on far more cars than I've driven or owned. So anyway, up until now I havent needed a car. The Blazer just sat. And well everytime I do need it, somethin else goes wrong with it. It's in the paper right now for $550.
So I started looking at used cars. If you said Ford, Chevy, or Dodge, I'd pick chevy. If you asked me what my favorite make is, I'd pick Nissan. But I've always been drawn to anything "diffrent". Especially something diffrent in the drivetrain. Rotary engines. Deisels in small cars. Them CVT's in the new Nissans. That kinda thing.
So theres this car lot about 30 miles from here. Very intresting stuff in that one. Most of them are theft recovery, repos, or minor-damage cars. (Got a '06 Chevy Silverado down there, $13,000 with 6,000 miles on it... upon further inspection, theres a BULLET HOLE about 12" below the passenger side mirror! Neat-o!) Well they also had this 86 Saab 900s with the 16 valve. 2 door sedan, not eh hatchback or convertible. LOL yeah my first thought was how ugly they are. But that thing keeps growing on me. Price on it was $2400 at first. It was 135,000 miles on it. It's red, tan interior. In GREAT shape. Oh the dash is cracked and that stuff glued to the glove-box door is coming off. But no stains, no tears inside. No chips or scratches outside. (3 dings from hail on the trunk though).
Ok so its just a lot. All the cars are locked. No buildings or anything, just a sign with a number. I call the guy today and arrange to meet him at 4:00. Now I can drive a stick, but not so good. I mean I've only driven a few and not for any length of time. I work and ride to work with my grandfather, whom I dont think has even owned an automatic. So I had him drive it. Just because I didnt want to go grinding gears in someone elses car. Well the guy gets there... actually he sent his brother with the keys. Took him a good minute to find the ignition (thats OK, it took me 5 to find out how to roll down the windows). The battery was dead. I know the car hasnt been moved in the 3 weeks I've been by there. He gets a jump-pack thing out of his truck.
It'd start, and die. Start and die. Probably 20 times. It'd run a little longer each time. Finally he got it running and after a bit it idled on its own.
So things arent looking too good. Once it started to warm up, smoke was coming from the passenger side of the engine. Appears to be gear oil that has dripped onto the exhuast and is burning off.
Well we get in and take off. It coughed/puked/sputtered when he got back on it after shifting from 3rd to 4th. Looked back and it was smokin like crazy. Drove it about 5 miles down the road, it stopped smoking at about mile 3. He got on it again good when we turned around, and brought it up to 90 before he had to slow down because of traffic.
Anyway... I guess my only real question is. How do you open the sun roof? LOL I never did figure that out.
The price dropped to $1,500 last weekend sometime. I like it. ALOT. Too much, even. It doesnt even look ugly to me anymore, haha.
So of course... the smoke and hard starting could have been from sitting. Or of course it could be something more serious. I know that 91' Chevy pickup we use around the land is hard to start after its sat for a few weeks, and it'll smoke a little too, but if you drive it everyday it'll fire right up and not smoke at all. The gear oil might not be a bad leak too, it wasnt caked all over down there on the transmission, but there was evidence it had been leaking for awhile.
I guess what I'm gonna do is see about driving it again tomorow. If it starts just as hard and smokes just as bad, then I'm gonna leave well enough alone. If it doesnt I'll say it was from sitting, and write the gear oil leak off.
It appears to have been VERY well taken care of though. Not one stain, cigarette burn, nothing. Gramps said everything was tight. It rode nice. Geez them seats were comfy, too! And I liked alot of the little intresting things going on inside.
Whats yalls opinions?
Oh, and how do you work the cruise control?
