i learned how to drive on a 1983 turbo hatch (manual trans), and am seriously considering purchasing something similar for use as a second car. with that in mind, i was hoping to get answers to the following:

1) is there any material difference between model years, in terms of performance, reliability or availability of replacement parts? i was thinking i would be looking for something 89-93 with low-ish miles. is this the right way to go?

2) i know that the clutch, engine mounts and heat shield all went on the '83 at about 100k miles. could someone give me an idea of what should go when on these cars, and an approximation of how much each repair should cost? i will not be able to do the work myself, and need to be able to evaluate my alternatives...

3) and lastly, if i should happen across an 'S' not a turbo, or an automatic as opposed to a manual, is it viable to consider having a turbo added or a tranny swapped out? are the various drive-train parts all compatible? if so, are the costs prohibitive?

thanks in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide!
