So, at last I have discovered why my car's stuck on base boost...

Took off the knock sensor to clean the connections, and before I bolted it back on did the "wrap it in a rag" test, which had me at full boost. I was all happy because I thought it was the electrical connection that was causing it, but I bolted the sensor back onto the block and tested again only to find myself back on base boost . How frustrating.

I am fairly certain that my engine isn't knocking. I've been running high test fuel since I bought it several months ago; I've changed the plugs (NGK), wires , cap, rotor (all bosch ignition stuff), air filter, oil, etc. and have cleaned out my injectors to get it back to stock. The thing runs perfectly. I'm sure the plugs are gapped properly - I am a recovering German, and as such am quite anal about having everything 'just right'- so you better bet if the bentley says between 24 and 28 (or whatever it is) I am exactly at 26 :)

So here's my question, or series of questions as it were: What's the probablity that I am actually getting knock? My belts are a bit noisy and the engine was warm but not hot when I tested it...could the sensor just be picking up ambient noise like a bum lifter or valve noise? Is it a safe bet to say that the sensor is faulty and just get a working one? I think I read on this site that the sensors rarely fail...

Just wondering what people have done when getting these same symptoms and how it worked out.

Granted, when I get my paycheck on Fri. I am going to buy an LED to better diagnose the situation, but just wanted to see if anyone had input.

Thanks!
Andrew
