I think some of you make a mistake to add the cost of annual emmisions/inspections to the cost of owning a SAAB. Same thing with oil changes.
These types of expenses are the same for any car. The only difference might be if you live in a state that charges personal property taxes, in which case a less expensive car cost less in personal property taxes than a newer car. Same with the requirement for collision/comprehensive riders on an insurance policy vs standard libability.
The issue with how much you spend/month equates to how reliable is the car. In my case, my 88 vert auto in 20 months has been brakes pads all around (<$80), some tires, new Aero rims (not a necessity but they sure look nice), antifreeze expansion tank (<$35). I really don't count oil changes and tires because all cars need oil changes and unless the tires wear out fast, they are also a common expense.
I would think abnormal wear items are what people are looking for. I owned a 9-5 once. With the first year (<60K), I had to replace the fuel tank, power steering pump, water pump and the timing belt tensioner pulleys at 62K. These are items that are outside the norm.
Just my opinion.
