Here are the quick facts: 1991 900T Convertible. About 160,000 miles. Used to be in excellent condition. Since I live in the city of Chicago, my car sat untouched for several months. I had noticed a pretty bad vibration under acceleration and decided to use public transportation more and figure it out later. "Later" is about one year later. My battery was dead but I quickly replaced it and she started on the first try. 'Atta girl. Engine is still smooth and feels strong. However, I'm (not surprisingly) still experiencing the issue of vibration under acceleration. The vibration, however, goes away if I press the clutch all the way in and effectively take it out of gear while coasting. The inner drivers were both replaced relatively recently... would I be wrong to suspect motor mounts? It's gotten to the point where my clutch "catches" at a different point now. Is this a sign of the engine moving around too much? I'm even hearing a front end clunking sound in the early gears that doesn't sound good. Any ideas?
I also have a brake issue that didn't exist before she unwillingly hibernated. The brakes feel like the ABS is on each time. There's a vibration somewhere in the brakes that makes a pretty nasty noise. Not pretty. I stopped by a brake place and they told me that I should drive it around for a few weeks to get off all the rust and everything else that accumulated on them for the year. I'm a week and a half into said experiment and so far it's not improving. Could the parking brake be stuck on? It's all the way down but feels very different than what I remember.
Other little issues: speedometer is out of commission, as is my gas gauge. Lovely. Also, my headlights don't work... but my brights do. Convertible top doesn't move an inch. Left headlight is pointing down, not forward. The list goes on and on...
Any ideas re: any of these issues?
I love my car and feel horrible that I neglected it for a year. Unfortunately, I have limited resources available to take her to the doctor as my law school loans are killing me. Keeping it cheap is a must.
Any ideas re: Saab mechanics in Chicago? I've stopped by SaabTech and they seemed less than friendly and I've heard some negative thingsd about them. I've had Peterson Automotive in Skokie recommended to me but I know nothing about them and they are quite far (as well as closed on Saturdays). Anyone else I can try? One thing I miss the most: living 15 minutes away from John at Saab Savior in Ky. What a luxury that was...
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Charlie
