Newer motor oils (API SM rated) do not contain as much Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP). This compound is what protected the gearbox. I'm hearing from lubrication experts that the lack of ZDDP could be a problem. The way to avoid the problem is to use an older motor oil, which I haven't had any luck finding, or to use motorcycle oil, which can put up with the heat caused by the engine sump being the top of the gearbox, and is also formulated with enough ZDDP for drive gears. Many motorcycles share engine and gearbox oil in one sump.
The reason for the reduction of ZDDP in the newer oils is that the less ZDDP, the longer the catalytic converter lasts. Back when Saab specified 10W30 or 10W40 in the gearbox you'll note that they mentioned the API SH rating. The oil I find in stores is all SL or SM these days.
