Ray, I can't disagreed with your concern over safety. Are you the original owner of the car? Just trying to gauge the history of the car, is it possible that something happened before you owned it? In either event things do happen and cars to brake. I confess that being a California guy I have no experience with rust, save the one car we brought back from Chicago. Nice place but really tough on cars.
If you would send an email to me I'll detail for you how to R & R the upper A arm. Two years ago we purchased a used 1990 900T 3dr auto from my brother. The upper & lower A arms *AND* the knuckle were bent. Still driveable but really unsafe. The seller had gotten an estimate from the dealer in the neighboorhood of $2000, going by the book removing the engine, and then replacing the parts. So we were able to purchase the car for $850. We purchased the three items from East of Sweden, they have a large used car fleet, and installed. I'm not telling you an "I thinkg" or an "I've heard" or even an "I've read". This is an "I've done it".
If it turns out you can't find the part let me know. Watch the following Video - you have to play past the static in the beginning, there are some things I just learning too!
