Dirk,
As others have said, it sounds more like a clutch problem. Could just be a broken spring in the master or air in the system. Only the splines which engage the clutch friction disk need to be greased, not the splines which engage the upper chainwheel bearing inside the tranny. That all gets splashed lubed with the tranny oil. Just put a small amount of high temperature grease on the shaft-to-disk splines, not enough to fling out onto the disk of course. The clutch shaft really doesn't move fore and aft in use, in fact it's locked with a spring wire ring into the chainwheel (it will release when you pull the shaft out). You can fully remove the shaft with the radiator in the car, but you don't need to just to grease the aforementioned splines. Work on the clutch hydraulics before you pull the clutch shaft, bet you'll solve the problem. Cheers.
