Brake conversion solutions?

For those of you who have converted earlier (in this case '85) to later ('89) brakes, how did you re-engineer the emergency brake handle and cable mounting between the front seats? I have everything completed except that, and am considering cutting the little cable bracket out of the donor car and attaching it between the seat belt buckle mounts, or drilling a 1x1x4" aluminum block to do the same thing. Since the rear (of the front seats)seat mount bar goes right through where the brake handle mount will need to go, I am wondering if the added height will pose a clearance problem with the center console when installed. How have you done (or seen it done) this in other conversion jobs? Thanks.
