Fatigue cracks generally propagate from a crack/inclusion/nick or somesuch but the point is they start from somewhere therefore the crack will show a progression pattern rather than a pure cracked pattern (pure crack---not the smoking kind--is like a powder metal connecting rod with cracked caps). Look for semicircular patterns emanating from one end of the crack or the other to confirm a fatigue failure.
You'll have to slice the knuckle such that the crack is visible.
