I found a post on the Townsend site:

Reading that, I'd say yes it can be done. Don't get confused by the 'the crank sensor turns at half the speed'-part, because I reckon it means the control unit gets the same information in both systems.
So, if you have a fitting distributor with Hall sensor, I suggest you give it a try. I can't imagine it would do any harm.
However, I seem to recollect that the wiring has changed over the years too, but I can't find any info on that anywhere. Maybe the 9000 board has it, tried there, but nothing so far.
