current draw for cooling fan

On my '90 turbo vert...
I started blowing 30 amp fuses for my Driver's side cooling fan (About one per week, but NEVER at an opportune time). Put a meter in series with the fuse and saw close to a 30 amp spike at start-up with ~8 amps constant load with the fan running. Is 8 amps a typical load for these fans? I think it's on its way out. It spins freely, but I'd bet the brushes are worn down.
Anyone ever install a non-OEM fan with more modest loads? I think most used fans are in similar condition, and I don't want to spend the $$ on new - they are expensive.
Thanks in advance!
Joe
