Make sure there is no debris in your throttle body and that the butterfly can completely close. Inept mechanics try to increase the idle speed by adjusting the stop screw, which is the wrong way to do it. Check for continuity between the pins on the throttle position switch when the throttle is closed. The idle adjustment, if there is one, is a bolt sticking out of the side of the throttle body, assuming the idle speed switch is working right. Don't adjust your idle by the tach on the dash, it's not accurate enough.
