Attempting the minor things like this is the first and best way to get started. If you screw it up too badly, you can still take it to a shop - that's what I've always told myself, anyway. Even the repairs that I've been terrified to do have turned out well thanks to this board, and I've never had any mechanical inclination until I my Saab obsession began. That's not to say that I have much now.....
You can always build a tool collection by purchasing only the specific ones for the job at hand, though in the long run it might be best to drop some cash for a good set - its cheaper to buy a good set than to buy one at a time. Be sure to get something that's guaranteed for life. I've broken more ratchets and socket adapters than I care to remember (it must be all the muscle on my 5-8 135lb frame), but a place like Sears will always replace them with few if any questions asked.
Don't forget that everyone here will help you as much as possible, especially if you play the damsel in distress card. Good luck - and don't be afraid to dig into your car. It gets you more in tune with your sweet Swede. Its the Zen and Art of Saab Maintenence, and you'll thank yourself later.......
