Need some opinions from folks who might be familiar with distributer internals. I went to help a neighbor repair a distributor that was leaking internally into his distributor cap and onto his heat shield. His car is a '91 turbo.
My recollection from my '89T was that the distributor shaft had a spiral groove and some fiber washers, which I replaced with fiber washers from a hardware store's plumbing selection. This ended my leak.
Surprise, surprise! When we disassembled his distributor (I think it's an 008 version) we found a radial shaft seal (like a crankshaft seal) inside and no spiral on the shaft. Seal dimensions are 12.5mm I.D. x 19mm O.D. and 5mm thick. A bit of research finds similar seals on VWs and Volvos, but that the only commonly available replacements are 12mm I.D., which also works.
The old nitrile o-ring is hard as a rock and has small cracks so I'm going to replace it. Seems to me that the problem with these distributors is not shaft wear, but hardened seals from heat, and disintegrated fiber washers. Another interesting observation from the ones that I've had apart is that there are upper and lower bushings with a hollowed out are occupied by felt to soak up excess oil or to keep the shaft oiled.
