The engines are damn near unbreakable. Burnt exhaust valve will give very low compression...he has NO way of knowing the oil burning is happening.
At 238K miles, it's not unusual to have to reseal/regasket the engine and I admit I had my 192K turbo engine reringed and resealed (but NOT valve job...still running fine at 290K miles) and more importantly new connecting rod and main bearings...seems corrosion hit the 87T pretty good.
Lastly, it's a nonturbo nonconvertible. Nice commuter car but nonsexy for the most part. I'd get the burnt exhaust valve replaced (heck, replace all eight of them, relatively cheap insurance) and valve seals and reseat the valve/seat interface but I wouldn't mill any head (didn't overheat?), replace the head gasket (have to), consider head bolt replacement if manual calls for it (torque to yield?), as well as replacing the timing chain on general principles...it HAS stretched and is noisy. Consider replacing the tensioner guide too...MUCH quieter engine. Other than that, unless it's leaking oil at the main seal or front seal, it shouldn't cost more than $1500 or so complete...find a good (in this case a better) indy shop.
