When a chain brakes, the valvetrain stops turning. Those valves left open when the chain breaks are then smashed by the pistons. You can test to see if your timing chain broke by removing the distributor cap, jacking one front wheel up, put car in gear, spin tire and see if distributor rotor spins.
The car will not run/start. A mechanic cannot be expected to know if the chain's structural integrity is sound but he can make an educated guess based on the chain tensioner position, mileage, oil change history, guide condition, etc.
Timing chains aren't like timing belts, which need periodic replacement. With proper oil changes, chains normally last the life of the car. Not that they don't go from time to time, but they are not like belts. If your car's engine did not make a lot of noise when it died, then I wouldn't suspect the chain. There are a lot of things that will cause a Saab (or any car) to take a dump.
