Try checking the voltage of the solenoid wire while someone holds the ignition key to the start position. You want to see at least 10 to 12 volts. If you don't have this amount of voltage, then I would think about replacing the ignition switch. Test the solenoid by running a jumper wire from the positive terminal of your battery to the connector where the ignition wire goes to. If the starter engages than your starter is operational. What I did in my 87/9000t was just to run a separate wire from the battery to a heavy duty switch inside the car and then back to the solenoid. This worked until I replaced the whole electrical part ignition switch and was able to keep the same ignition key tummbler, since these parts are separate. Eventually, a bad ignition switch "has" the potential to cause an electrical fire when the internal contacts of the ignition switch fails. Not trying to scare you, just a consideration.
