I checked a bunch of reviews when looking for speakers to replace the ones in my 900 coupe. SoundStream had some positive reviews of the "best 6x9 for under $300" category. The reviewers were especially impressed with the bass response, which is what I was looking for. (They were not impressed with the stupid-looking spider speaker grills) :-). They certainly delivered what the reviewers said. Not what you'll get with a new head unit, amp and subs... but I was looking for an "upgrade", not the "ideal system".
I'm not sure if the 6.5" for the convertible will deliver the same results as the 6x9s, but I'm willing to give it a shot.
When my son replaced the speakers in his 900 with the Pioneers, we descovered that the PO had replaced the OEMs with Polks. A highly reviewed speaker and what I put in my 900CV last summer. We couldn't figure out why they were so crackly until we pulled them. The poly cones had stress cracks in them. The only thing I can think is that the combined heat through the windshield and their proximity to the heating duct caused their premature failure.
The SoundStream SST 4.0s fit in the dash grills with no problem. I just mounted the frequency seperator to the underside of the grill with the mounting tape included.
Through my research, I've found that Soundstream is known mainly for their amps and other high-end audio equipment. I too had never heard of them prior to reading the reviews.
I was delighted and surprised to descover shipsound(.)com. Their prices were unbelievable. Literally half what other online resellers were asking, and considerably less than MSR.
To fit the 6x9s in the back of a 900 I just made a mount from a piece of 3/4 plywood. It's a slightly complicated procedure and patern that is not easily explained without pics. Maybe I'll put up a DIY page one of these days.
