Car mysteriously died -- looking for suggestions

I was driving my 1985 900T the other day when I had to accelerate hard. I was probably at about 4000+ rpm in 2nd gear, about to shift, when my engine bucked and died. Won't restart. Cranks but won't fire. It's making spark (tach bounces and I get spark out of the coil). I have been suspecting that that timing was a little off, which may account for it coughing at high rpm.
I looked around for a hose off, thinking the boost pressure or an intake backfire might have blown one off, but didn't see anything. I pulled the connector off the AMM to see if I could induce it to run in 'limp home' mode, but it wouldn't start (normally it will run, surging, with the AMM disconnected).
Here's the really strange thing: no matter how many times or how long I crank the starter, there's no hint of trying to run, but after I stop cranking the motor (letting the key spring back to 'run'), as I turn the key from 'run' to 'off' (not from 'start' to 'run') the engine will sputter a little. It will only do it if I don't wait very long to turn it off after cranking. I can't figure out why it would do this.
Had to leave the car on a side street. I'm going back later today to troubleshoot, but I'm interested if anyone has any suggestions or if this failure sounds familiar to anyone.
Thanks!
