There is no other locating feature securing the caliper, so the bolts appear to be under sheer stress. However, their clamping force provides substantial friction with the knuckle, so the tension they are under may be the greater factor.
Yes, I'm comfortable with these (9.8 hardness) for the short term.
They were ruined because for a 22 yr old car, they were pretty well rusted into place and it took MANY DOZEN seconds with an air wrench (650 ft lbs) to back them out. That ruined the hex head on both of them.
I'd like to know the hardness of the OEMs because it just may be that the less hard ones can provide greater and more reliable clamping force than could a 10.8 hardness.
