Clicking noise on 16v 2.0L - worried about smoke

Just bought my '88 900S. It has always made a small clicking noise that goes with the rpms. My old 900 ('91 2.1L) made this exact same noise when it was low on oil. I've check this one, and not only is it plenty full, but it looks very clean, as if freshly changed.
This wouldn't worry me, except that it started pouring massive amounts of smoke out the tail pipe today. My step-mom noted it smelled SWEET, not like burning oil or gasoline. At this point, temps were very high so we shut it down. Coolant reservoir was at the minimum mark (after releasing the pressure). We added more, started her up - temps dropped and less smoke, but still some. I drove 15 minutes in bad traffic - temps soared the whole time. Once I got where I was going, the smoke was gone, but temps still high. Fluid in the reservoir was down about an inch from where I'd filled it.
Ideas? Is there any correlation between the clicking and this mysterious smoke? Thanks for any ideas. Feel free to email me at swimdude*at*pigasus.com
