Hi folks,
I recently went through the right sideview mirror replacement drill. I found a replacement mirror, i.e., glass attached to the plastic backing/mounting hardware, for around $60 US at a local dealer. It was a bit more expensive than I had anticipated, but I had already gone through the silicone glue fix several years ago, and the residue on the old backing was not looking good.
Other posters are correct in explaiing how to detach the old mount and attach the new mounted mirror. There is a small hole in the bottom of the mirror body that can accommodate a small, flat blade screwdriver. Swivel the old mirror mount so that it is flat (i.e., not tilted appreciably in any direction), then poke the small screwdriver through the bottom hole. You should see 3 or 4 plastic teeth from the old mount. Use the screwdriver to pry the teeth counterclockwise until all the teeth are to the right of the 6 o'clock position. Then gently pry the mirror backing from the mirror body. It nay take a little coaxing because the mirror backing is also glued to the mirror body.
When the mirror backing pops loose, it may dislodge some of the mirror adjustment equipment. Before installing the new mirror, use the adjustment controls to verify that the mirror adjustment assembly works. Pay particular attention to the little rack and pinion assembly on top of the adjustment motor. These are the parts most likely to come loose, and they control the vertical tilt of the mirror. If they do come loose, it's a matter of gently repositioning them so that the pinion gear smootly drives the little plastic rack back and forth.
The back of the new mirror mount will contain a rotating ring like the old one. Look closely at the back of the mount to identify several small holes that the plastic ring locks over. These holes mate with small plastic pins in the mirror body. With the lock ring in the open position, carefully insert the mirror and mount onto the mirror body. When you are reasonably sure that the mirror is mounted correctly, press the mirror and mount into the mirror body. The adhesive on the back of the mount will partially secure the mirror. Now take the small flat blade screwdriver, insert it through the bottom hole in the mirror assembly, and use the blade to rotate the teeth of the lock ring clockwise.
Test the mirror adjustment mechanism to be sure you haven't dislodged any of the mechanism during re-assembly. With your hand protecting the new mirror, shake and bump the mirror body to ensure that the mirror is firmly attached.
If the mirror adjusts and doe not fall off when you shake and rattle the mirror body, you're done.
The above is an elaboration -- based on first hand installation experience -- from instructions in the Haynes manual. Be aware that Bentley has no information on this particular procedure.
