I just pry them off with a flat-head from behind. If you think of the buttons as roughly rectangular in shape, go at them from the long side. I pull the switch away from the wheel as much is necessary to get the tabs to clear.
I also hold my breath: Of the ones I've seen, it appears that the early buttons have been superceded by a better version made with the gray plastic. I've not been able to remove an earlier one (white plastic) without breaking it...
