If it's tough to get it into reverse... ... it probably means that you overtightened the bolt that holds the linkage in place. I did Austin's, and had to fiddle with the torque on that bolt (which should have loctite on it!) to get it just right to keep it from binding. It doesn't require much torque to hold it in place. Try popping the side cover and loosening it just a hair, then see how the shift feels. If good, remove the screw, apply new loctite and snug it up, don't over do it!
Not sure how this would effect it holding the gear in place, though...
