***DO NOT TAP THE END OF THE STEERING COLUMN FOR ANY REAON!!!
The steering column is actually two parts that are CLAMPED together. The first part, which protrudes through the dash and holds the wheel, and a second part, which has two knuckle joints in it, that goes into the floor of the car, and connects to the steering rack. This second part is probably where the issue occurred. Follow the steering column up from the boot where it goes through the floor to the first knuckle joint. Just above that joint is a clamp with a screw in the side. Make sure the first part of the column is seated in the clamp, and tighten the screw that clamps it down. Second, Remove the boot that surrounds the steering column at the floor, and inspect where the shaft goes into the steering rack. Make sure it didn't come dislodged from the rack too. If it did, just open the clamp, and push it back in.
