Operation of Cooling Fans

Please; someone, please...un-confuse this technologically-challenged old retired fighter pilot, so I can get my 93 900S to my indy with best info.
I have a 93 900S, with A/C. I have searched the archives, but cannot decipher the posts with regard to the proper operation of the two cooling fans.
Is the left fan (from perspective of the driver's seat) supposed to operate when the A/C is on? If so, does that mean when the switch is on, or when the compressor is actually engaged?
How 'bout the right fan (on passenger side)...operate when engine temp reaches a high level?
Right now, my compressor is not operating; I think it just failed, since it was pumping out ice-cold air one day, then ambient air the next...compressor is not turning, and no signs of coolant leakage. But...the left fan does not come on when switch is pushed in -- I thought it should. The right one does work when engine temp reaches about 3/4 range, toward hot.
So, I'm pleading...please, someone state simply and clearly how the fans are supposed to work.
Thanks a bunch,
Roy Cash
