Do I have to change those? Posted by Saana88 [Email] (#207) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saana88) on Mon, 25 Aug 2008 16:06:10 In Reply to: Re: Congrats..., jtm, Mon, 25 Aug 2008 05:23:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, outside of the (insert expletive here) Centric rebuilds locking up like clockwork every 22 months, the last time I wore out a set was in '05, and they were the rears.
It depends on the road ahead. If I'm going to have to slow down, I usually use engine braking if it puts the engine over 2000 RPM when the bypass valve opens, the venturi plate drops, and very very little fuel is injected into the engine. If I don't want to slow down, I'll coast. That's really not the main part of the game, though. The key for me is not slowing down or speeding up more than necessary. If the light is red but I can see it changing the other way, I'll slow a little early on, then use up that distance as the traffic ahead accelerates up to my maintained speed. The 1400 RPM shifts have something to do with it, too.
There is a large hill on my way home. I have to hit it at 45 or so to stay in fourth gear. If somebody with an overpowered automatic is ahead of me and they take ten seconds to realize they're losing speed, then they can't use more than half throttle, I'll be down in third trying not to lug the engine too much, and probably mutter a few things about them getting their licenses in Happy Meals. Keep moving as much as you can safely. Gain a little speed before the hill, let the car slow down slightly going up it, then recover that speed after the crest. And for God's sake STOP DRAG RACING.
