I got the SAS whaletail I picked up on the bay. It arrived yesterday. The first thing I noticed is that it is very light. It probably weighs about a third of what an OEM whaletail weighs. That's a good thing. I won't have to get stronger hatch supports. It looks pretty well made, but unlike the OEM part, it has a solid bottom instead of the open cavity with ribs at the mounting points. I'm not sure how much tweaking of the fit I'll be able to do because of that--we'll see. The finish is OK, I expect that I'll have some sanding, contouring and filling to do before I go to paint.
Two big problems I have with it: The lip that goes under the rear window weatherstrip is not contoured like the OEM tail. It's about 1/4" thick (instead of 1/8") and I'll have to remove some material to make it fit properly. The biggest problem I have is that the rear of the tail is wrong. The OEM whailtails usually develop a problem where the rubber surround slips off the rear lip of the wing; and then that lip, which is usually covered, gets exposed. When SAS made their mold, they molded it from a whaletail with the rubber part off the rear lip, which makes the part look wrong. No way I can see to fix that. I'm probably being picky, but that's just me.
Last night I took some accurate measurements from my OEM whaletail and cut a small groove in the SAS tail to simulate the seam between the rubber and cast parts on the OEM tail. (SAS filled in the gap when they molded theirs, to make the top smooth and seamless). I plan to paint the SAS tail with semi-flat black paint where the OEM has rubber, and gloss paint on the rest of the wing. The groove I cut will help to enhance the effect. Like I said, I'm picky.
Pics later as I go along...
