Can't replace O-ring on tranny dipstick tube

I've searched & searched this web site. Twice today I've had trouble installing a pipe with an O-ring. Firstly, the turbo return oil pipe, where it goes into the block. The new O-ring from eeuro was simply too large. Even without the complexity of having it connected to anything, I was unable to slide the pipe into the receiver on the engine block. Fortunately, I found another O-ring in my collection that worked fine.
Now I'm trying to push the tranny dipstick tube back in, again w/ a new O-ring from eeuro. I am unable to get that in place, using lube, direct force and pounding on the pipe (which I don't like to do). Nothing worked. Unfortunatley, my collection has no slightly smaller O-rings.
Here's the question:
Is there a method for sliding these in? How hard should it be? I've been doing auto repairs as an amature for decades and can accomplish just about anything, but this has got me.
Leaning toward the Permatex solution.
