Baby wants more quality time (alternator)

I replaced the starter, battery, and alternator 2 days ago. The alternator was under warranty because it was putting out on 68 amps. Now the new one is only charging at 11.5 volts. One thing I am planning on trying is cleaning the alternator ground; I already did the battery ground at both ends. The guy at Advance Auto Parts mentioned something about an exciter wire which I am assuming is the green one that is hooked up next to the (+) cable.
How do I check the exciter wire, and is there anything else that I should look into? I will be driving from Florida to Ohio on January 2 for the next semester.
Thank you
Brett H
