Quiet but total transmission failure

'92 turbo conv. 5 speed. Driving along at 55+/- in 5th when engine revs up as if clutch was disengaged. Otherwise no significant sounds. Clutch seems to be working, Car shifts into all 5 gears and reverse but no movement. I can see (and hear) that the shifter linkage is working. There is some (minimal)engagement of 5th which, I know, seems to suggest clutch failure. Clutch has less than 5000 miles on it. I removed the round cover plate at the end of the clutch shaft to confirm that it had not become disengaged from the flywheel splines but it is in the proper position and spinning. I thought that perhaps the splined sleeve for the cluster gear had become disconnected, but then, there's no forward movement in 5th either which, as I recall is a direct connection. What's bewildering is that there's no "racket" like you would expect if there was some sort of catastrophic failure like broken chains, broken CV, broken splines or final drive gear.
One (unlikely) thought is a sudden and massive failure of the main seal which could drench the clutch but, again, no advance warning of such a thing. I still have clutch pedal pressure and no apparent drop in the fluid level.
So, I've got some sleuthing to do like remove the plastic clutch cover, remove the forward most passenger side trans. cover plate, etc. Any other thoughts or similar experiences?
Thanks,
Kenzo
