I have heard others wrap string around the tires only, or around the bumpers. The trouble with that is the track of the 900 is wider in the rear than the front, and my bumpers may not be sqaure. Make sure your wheel is centered before you start.
First I measured the front-end and rear-end track using the inside of the rims for measurements. I have seen that the track on the 900 is 10 mm wider in the rear in the data specs. My measurements said 16 mm difference for my car, who knows why.
Then I used 4 jackstands, one at eack corner of the car (not supporting the car, just on the floor next to each corner), and ran string between the front and rear jack stands (one sting per side), with the string running just about at the center of each wheel (half way up).
Then I adjusted the string such that is was just touching the REAR of the REAR wheel (there is a slight toe-in of the rear wheels so the FRONT of the REAR is about 1-2 mm away from the string. I then measured the distance from the center of the REAR wheel (Saab insignia on my wheel). Call that measurement X. I then adjusted the FRONT wheel part of the string to be X+8mm (8 mm comes from the 16 mm difference in track divided by 2) away from the center of the FRONT wheel. I repeated the same step for the other side.
I am talking about the FRONT wheels only at this part:
I measured the distance from where the string crosses the front part of the rim of the FRONT wheels, and then measured the distance of the back part of the rim where the string crosses at the FRONT wheels on both sides.
The measurement on my car was:
Front Left Wheel: front of rim 21mm, rear of rim 20mm
Front Right Wheel: front of rim 20mm, rear of 21 mm
I take this to mean I have ZERO toe, which was my goal (wheels slightly pointed to right).
The tube video was very helpful, and had a lot more detail and work than I needed, but was still great.
