I'd suspect the solenoid. The solenoid acts as a relay, switching the high current to the starter. The click you hear is the solenoid pulling in. Of course, if you've got the starter out to replace the relay, you might as well put in a rebuilt starter.
Don't ignore the simple stuff - when you try to start the car, do the lights stay bright, or do they dim/go out? If the lights go out, you might have a simple bad connection at the battery. If the lights stay bright, then the big electrical load of the starter isn't there, and I'd suspect the solenoid. Of course as noted, replacing the solenoid but keeping a 227K starter is asking for trouble.
