Ignition key free style (long read)

Well the 92 black beauty 900 hatchback 2.1liter 5 speed(distributor fingers gone bad)has again presented me with a puzzle. Started fine this cold morning. Got to work pulled into spot, turn off key. Thought it was in Reverse but no, stated drifting back so I moved shifter to reverse, wouldn't go so I moved key to run position, BUT it was totally free moving as if it was not engaging the ignition switch teeth. Had to get to ignition switch wires during lunch and figured out how to hot wire start her. After work she started up with hot wiring , and i went to my place and got a automatic shift unit thinking I could remove the key (and gears)and put it in her on WEDS. After looking at the key and tumbler arrangement, I don't think if I remove it from the spare shift unit it will do any good. I'm thinking the problem feels as if the key teeth have seperated from the bottom of the key tumbler. Is this possible. Any ideas or suggestions on this type problem? Its about 10 degrees here and I really don't want to go at this in the blind. Does the gear /teeth part remove from the key tumbler housing? if so how. I saw nothing in the Bentley about that.
Thanks to all in advance. Nice whale tail Jon.
