Well, this is humiliating, but I'm big enough to admit it. I struggled with this SOB from 3pm until 1am with only one hour break. The pump would not come out. It hung up on either the motor mount, the corner of the head, or the inner fender.
Worse, I tried to remove the bracket and actually got two of the screws out from behind the pulley. But I couldn't get them back in, no way no how. So the pump is definitely jury-rigged until I can get it out.
Tried to raise the engine and loosen the passenger-side motor mount, but the motor mount nut wouldn't budge even with PB Blaster and a breaker bar. If I could have done that, the pump would have come out.
The worst part: with the PS pump belt and AC belt removed, I started the engine and still had the bearing and belt squeal that started this process a few weeks ago. It's the alternator that has a bad bearing. So all this trouble with the PS pump was a total waste.
Let this be a warning to all: the Bentley manual only tells part of the story, and what it leaves out is critical to getting the job done. It's a POS, but unfortunately there are no better guides available, other than bitter experience.
