Probably should have mentioned that this is an 87 900T. It appears to me that the twist on sockets insert into holes in a motherboard of sorts. So the little tabs on the socket (once you have rotated it 30 degrees or so) must land on contacts on the motherboard. All of this takes place on the other side of the board so you can get at the tabs with meter probes to check the voltage. Also I would imagine that the wires you talk about feed the entire motherboard and if they were bad, nothing would be working. I will check to see if their is a separate fuse for the dash lights, but I tend to doubt it.
