hi,
you mentioned no battery light at all. If you put a jumper battery on and can get headlights, radio, and all that jazz... the battery icon had better light up. It should then go off when the car has started. If it doesn't do the first... either the illumination light (which is a special one - different wattage than all of the rest) is missing or burned out OR the wire on the alternator is broken or pulled off. It's a white green stripe wire and is usually on the side closest to the fender, at about 3 o'clock as viewed from the front of the car. If the wire is not in place, and/or the bulb is not is place, the alternator will not charge. An easy check that is fast... unbolt the ground connection from the battery. push it back on but only hand tight. have a buddy sit in the car and start it while you use the jumpers. remove the jumpers, if the engine stalls, do it again but have your buddy bring the rpms to right at 2,000, and remove the jumpers. Bet it stays on this time... so whatever it took to keep it running, you've pulled the jumpers, then pull the ground wire. If it keeps running the alternator is charging. If you are at 2,000 rpm ease it back to about 1,000. if it keeps running the alternator is working, however if you had to push 2,000 rpm to keep it running the bulb is out. if it dies when you pull the jumpers no matter what the battery is flat AND the voltage regulator/brush assembly is suspect, usually the brushes wear down so far that they don't work. easy to change them, $20 of parts.
