DIY armrest for the classic SAAB 900 Posted by K-Saab [Email] (#1142) [Profile/Gallery] (more from K-Saab) on Sun, 15 Feb 2009 18:07:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've been thinking about fabricating an armrest for a long time. Here's what I finally came up with: Subaru center counsel cover from a mid nineties sedan. metal base from a door kick plate. Gate hinge with a plastic bushing from Lowe's. 3' x 1" x 1/8" flat steel for bracket. Propane torch to bend steel. Small piece of hardwood as horizontal support. Assortment of screws nuts & washers. One rattle can of primer & one can of gloss black. About eight hours labor to source materials & construct. It took a lot of fitting to get everything level. Total cost $20.76.
The other two armrests I've seen look bulky.
Structurally, it's pretty strong. The lower portion of the bracket is screwed to the two vertical counsel brackets the with three inch screws. The hardwood horizontal bracket has a "v" notched out of the bottom for greater surface area contact.
I leave it in the up position for intown driving & flip it to the down position for long freeway driving.
