When's the last time a clutch job was performed? There are indeed two bearings up there that could be the culprit: the release bearing (AKA Throw-Out bearing) and the flywheel bearing.
It's good practice to replace them when doing a clutch job. Unfortunately, you have to pull the clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder to replace either bearing. Fortunately, it's a relatively easy DIY job, especially with working hydraulics.
Search here, but I don't think it's recommended that you attempt to lube the release bearing, due to its vicinity to the clutch disc.
Oh yeah, does it change when you step on the clutch?
Good luck,
Jonathan
