Steering hard on a 90 900

Last Friday, on a day trip from home, the steering became funny... sometimes hard to steer (like a car w/o power steering) sometime easy, even easier than normal. In the direction of travel (+/- 20 degrees of steering wheel movement), almost seems like slop in the wheel, as it's very easy to steer.
HISTORY: replaced the rack and high pressure hoses last summer with a rebuilt unit from a Saabnet sponsor. Old rack was leaking horribly but worked fine. Cleaned out hoses, flushed clean the tank, new ball joints, 1 axle assy (the other almost new), new ends.... Everything was good until Friday.
Everything looks solid physically. Fluid is full. Nothing broken or bent. It does not appear like a loose belt, as it is snug.
Can this be a pump failure? I've never had a unit fail on any vehicle, so I am new territory. If not, rack failure? Can the alignment 'pop' out radically and quickly? (the day trip had me on a few gravel roads) Help.
Thanks for any suggestions on things to try or the obvious solution.
