In my opinion, the '97 would be much crazier than the '91, even if it were half the price, and half the miles. Then again, I have an extremely low opinion of anything GM, and that includes Opel.
The first thing I'd do when you get the '91 is flush and fill the coolant with Mercedes-Benz coolant, per Townsend (references can be found on this board). This is especially important as the '91 has the 2.1 motor. This requires no space to work, just the coolant and something to drain in, really. Then give it an oil change with Mobil 1 and a good (Mann, or OEM Saab) filter. That should take care of a lot of the potential problems, believe it or not...
Some years ago, I bought an '89 900S for $900 with 120k on it and it lasted me a year. Would have lasted longer except I was too much of an idiot to spend the $300 to fix a bad clutch slave and bought a Montero from a friend in a pinch (It was X-mas, and the Montero was purchased with a handshake, on time). Was going to fix the Saab, but never got around to it, and the city towed it. I still am kicking myself for that...
