Doing the tranny swap on my 94 vert:
I have a shifter from the donor and it was screwed up due to careless removal (not me, the guy who removed it at the junkyard).
The donor had no key, he busted the mechanism for the key and lost many parts. I noticed that the auto shift actually looks identical to the manual, ,, so I dismantle the autoshift off of the housing and attached the manual shifter (plasic part and all). It looks like this could work, the key works and the shifter seems to work too. I also removed the reverse switch and put it on. (fits perfect).
Here are the questions:
1. Is this really going to work? It looks perfect. The main concern is the key reverse lock. I think it looks right but I don't have the old one to check against (those are the lost parts). Is the auto and manual shift lock the same part? If not, can I grind it down to make it right?
2. What sort of grease do I use on the shifter ball? I cleaned the gritty stuff off and out of the plastic cup. It looks like Moly grease, all black and such.
3. Should I wait until the transmission / engine is reinstalled before putting the shifter back?
4. The reverse pin on the bottom looks too low, so that even when I pull up on the reverse thing on the shifter it only goes up about 1/4 inch. Is this right? Does the reverse pullup thing move only a 1/4 inch up? Again, I don't have a live one to check.
5. The shift linkage rod to the trans has a slight bend to it. Is this normal?
