AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING
Disconnect and shield battery ground cable.
Wait at least 20 minutes, so power in capacitor pack located in the airbag ECU will discharge.
Disconnect airbag ECU electrical connectors, the ECU is located behind the lefthand side of the instrument panel.

STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT
Removal
Disable airbag system as described under ``Precautions.''
Remove radio and radio contact box, if equipped.
Remove center console as follows:
Remove rubber dust excluder between center console and gear lever, then the ashtray.
Remove ashtray holder mounting screws, then the holder.
Remove four center console lower mounting screws, then withdraw console slightly and remove two upper retaining screws.
Remove center console.
Remove bottom steering column bearing cover, then the knee guard.
Remove floor air duct mounting screws, then place duct aside.
Remove steering wheel center pad (airbag module) mounting screws, then disconnect airbag electrical connector. Remove center pad.
Position front wheels in straight ahead position, then disconnect horn connector.
Remove steering wheel.
Remove holder for wiper and indicator stalk switches. Mark and remove switch connectors.
On models with cruise control, disconnect cruise control connector.
On all models, remove cable ties holding wiring to steering column. Disconnect horn and contact unit electrical connector.
Remove wear guard on right side of steering column.
Unhook spring from pedal assembly and remove defroster hose.
Separate cruise control vacuum hose at T piece, if equipped.
Remove nut and bolt from clamping joint on steering column shaft.
Remove steering column retaining bolts and washers. Lower steering column and withdraw it from intermediate steering column shaft.
Installation
Reverse removal procedure to install, noting the following:
Coat steering column retaining bolts with Loctite and torque to 15-20 ft. lbs.
Torque clamping joint bolt to 20-25 ft. lbs.
Set contact unit to center position as follows:
Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position.
Turn contact unit clockwise as far as possible, then turn it counterclockwise the number of turns indicated by yellow label on contact unit connecting cable.
Torque steering wheel nut to 24-32 ft. lbs.
Torque steering wheel center pad (airbag module) mounting screws to 4.1-5.3 ft. lbs
This is the book way of removing the column. You should be able to just remove the lower joint.
