Search the board for rust in the shock tower where the spring and shock attach, more common on 9000s I think, but you have some surface rust which suggests age or harsh environment (ie constant dampness)in that area. Rusted sheet metal weakens and suspension pulls out of position until the spring pokes through.
Also, I assume it was never towed or tied down from the rear axle by a flatbed towtruck as that could bend the axle.
